| MLU is honoured to introduce Stanley Scislowski, originally of Windsor, Ontario, and sometime member of D Coy, The Perth Regiment, 5th Canadian Armoured Division, '43-'45. | ||
| Stan joined the Perths as an infantry draftee in England in August 1943, and served continuously with the regiment, through all its trials and tribulations, until January 1945, when he was hospitalized with a service-related leg injury which kept him out of the remainder of the war. | ||
| Upon returning home in late 1945, Stan became closely involved with activities of the Royal Canadian Legion, and remains so today. In the intervening years, he also researched and wrote about many of his experiences, resulting in the 1997 publication of a book entitled NOT ALL OF US WERE BRAVE (Dundurn Press, Toronto). It constitutes a remarkable account of life in Italy as a Private Soldier, detailing with stunning clarity the miseries, the triumphs, the brutality and the humour of service as a Canadian soldier in the lines. This book should be required reading for all students of Canadian history. | ||
| Retired now from a civilian career in the electroplating business, Stan spends much of his time working on behalf of his fellow veterans through his Legion affiliation. His perspective is simple - the suffering and sacrifices of Canadians in World War II should not be forgotten. As such, Stan has joined MLU as a 'roving columnist'; in these pages, he will write about Canada's war from the perspective of the nameless, faceless common soldier who was the very essence of our contribution to Final Victory. You will laugh, and you will cry, as indeed they did. And you will not forget, as they haven't. | ||
