Pete,
A while back you sent me drawings of your toolbox for your truck. (Chev Cab 12) I was out of town for a while on business and my email account expired and hence I lost the drawings. Glad you got them OK and can read them. Remember that the welds should be butt gas, but you can get away with MIG if you use a sanding disc to round off the sharp edges. I should add that the steel is all 16 gauge, thats about 2.5mmm in new money. Post some Pictures when you have made up the box. Regards Pete |

I have made up plans on how to build a tool box and spare tire carrier for anyone that wants to make one There is 15 pages of pictures and drawings not to scale but with the measurements .You can send me your address and I will mail them to you Maybe a good metal worker will build some as there is alot of interest wanting tool boxes and roof hatches . Retied and no time left!!

I have sent out 18 copies for this box . What is needed is for someone to make the tire clamps for everyone as they are the hard part to make . It requires a mold and a press to form them . Better then each one struggling doing his . I have sent plans to Australia ,New Zealand and all over Canada . Happy building guys

For the wonderful set of drawings and back up pictures of the original box.......
The worst part to fabricate is the clamshell portion.... ..... wonder if any one has ever considered making a mold and casting out of aluminium...... old auto tranny cases and old pistons. Might not be as strong but could be sufficient for our parade duties. Thanks again for sharing the information. Bob C. As indicated in the to Glue or not to Glue thread I have started on that most elusive creature for CMP enthusiasts. The legendary Spare Tire Carrier and Tool Box.
First off I wish to thank George Mackenzie for his comprehensive plans, they truely are a must if you are going to persue this endeavour. I have deviated slightly from his process but I am sure the end result will be the same. I sourced out the initial big stuff to a sheetmetal shop to bend and shape. Well, I got some angles cut and some small "chunks" ready. I am now concentrating on all the little stuff and musing over the "clam shells". I have several ideas but haven't made up my mind yet. They will no doubt be the last pieces made.

Looks like a nice project, George did a nice job of the drawings, what are your thoughts on the clam shell clamps ? Georges tool box has the welded on clamps and I guess the entire tool box is welded, the model I have is bolted assembly and I have been thinking of contacting a foundary to stamp the clam shell clamps, I have one for a pattern, but would be interested in three more for myself, if you have any interest let me know. As mentioned, I have been musing over the clamshells. I don't know if you are aware, I am one of those who purchased 10.50 X 16 tires for my F15A. Now I know they are not the correct size for my 15 Cwt but damn they look good on "her". That being said I am planning to "modify" the clamshells to accomodate the width of the tires as I bought a set of 5. I believe they will be wider than the correct ones for the 9.00 series tires. I am considering making a concrete mold, turning up the ol' CW music, find my ear defenders and excersize my cork-pulling arm. ![]() Mike in Windsor Ontario |

Considering the complexities of trying to form clamshells, I would think that having some sandcast in malleble iron would be the way to go.
Not 100% authentic but the cost of making dies to stamp repos and the need for a 2000t press would be somewhat "prohibitive". I'm sure one could scratch build them from a few pieces welded together but hey, lots of elbow grease for sure.... Just a thought. |

Chris hit it on the nose.
Currently working with 1/16 (16 guage) plate and not too maleable. Since I am planning to form ones to fit the 10.50s, I am already parting from original specs. Easily changing clamshells at a later date for someone who will be the next custodian of the truck will bring it back to proper spec. Any way....there are many possibilities for which material to use. With a coat of paint one would be non-the-wiser. Brass...copper....aluminum...etc. I will be experimenting to find the right kind of material for the job. Considerations....strength, maleability, rigidity...you get the point. More to follow later....gotta put the uniform on and head to the unit for a forenoon's worth of PER work...that time of year. Cheers Mike in Windsor Ontario |

Hanno, what is GRP? Glass reinforced plastic. Do you mean Fiberglass?
or something more exotic like radar obsorbing carbon fiber....radar obsorbing wouldl definately be necessary after all it is powered by one of those huge V8s...don't want the Gendarms pinching me with radar. ![]() cheers Mike |

The best reproduction of a clamshell carrier and tool box I saw were done by 2 gentlemen by the names of Walter Brand and Albert banes. You could not tell which was the reproduction or the original at first glance. The only difference I saw was the pitting from the damage rusting had on the metal.

A little progress....had some snow to clear after the plow came by.
![]() Cut the curve on the 2 sides to accommodate the spare tire and did some layout work for the partition and the top. I have no plasma cutter but have managed to scarf the material with a grinder and then used tin snips and bending back and forth...and finish off with the grinder. All in all not too bad. The top is 1/8 plate....I will probably use the good ol' gas axe tomorrow. Bob...it's a Jackson Triggs Cabernet Merlot till tomorrow ![]() Mike in Windsor Ontario |

Spent an hour bendin, grindin, cutin, bleedin an' burnin.....
![]() Got the gas axe out and cut the curve for the spare tire on the 1/8' plate. Yes, a plasma cutter would be nice....have added it to my list for Santa. How many shopping days left? Finished cutting out the partition and it is ready to be installed. I figure at this rate I should be just about done by this time next week. Well I am just in from the garage. Still snowing....
I finshed making the final cuts to the bottom of the box and proceded to use the glue to put the bottom in the box. After it is set and dry I will do a few welds here and there. I placed the top on to get the correct distance between the two sides. It is not on there permanently yet. Tomorrow I will take the top off and insert the partition and the one inner brace. These will also be glued in with just a couple of welds afterwards. Then I will fabricate the lids and doors and the weird angle piece for the ends. ![]() Mike in Windsor On |

Hi Mike
Suggestion, depending on your type of welding pinch spot, mig weld etc you may want to decide on where you are going to weld mark the spots and not use any glue in those locations. The reason I've tried mixing welds and door panel glue and it did not work well. When using pinch spot weld the glue acted as insulator and thus not weld between the layers and if you crank up the heat you get a melt dent. When using mig welder similar problem enough heat to weld burned the glue. The solution is leave marked glue-less areas about the size of a dime. PS I like the glue system of attaching door panels on modern car doors because you can get a more rust resistant sealed seam.
