http://aera.org/techtools.aspx best online look up I’ve found for casting numbers from this you can get the year of the block. Don’t be surprised if the different engine parts come out having different years, chevy 6s are real mix and match sometimes.

http://www.chevytrucks.org/tech/engine1.htm pretty good step by step set of articles on Stovebolt engines
