Hi Mark, Good to hear from you and that the western HUP is progressing. We have been fortunate at the barn in that we recovered three HUP rolling frames and a body with one side door only- all 43-44, so the shock links won't fit the 45. However, if you go to the Vintage Powerwagon site ( http://www.vintagepowerwagons.com/pd.../16springs.pdf ) you will see some 9 1/4 in downlinks for sale at $15.00 ea. This is where I got mine. As for doors, none of the doors I have are useable, either from rust or abuse or both. But! An opportunity just came up that I am going to investigate. There may be some news in this regard next week.

I still have the upper divider frame for you. Some day I will get out your way, I just don't know when...in the meanwhile, I am looking forward to comparing notes with you on your 45 HUP. Cheers!

P.S.
No luck with your friendly farmer?

Default Clarification.......

Hi Mark

On the shock absorber links..... are in need of front or rear....????

I may have some rear available..... no fronts.....but Rob suggestions is a good one.

On the doors..... any considerations to fabricating your own....?

Rob may have to do that..... and I will work with him to repro as accurately as possible.......

Hi Bob

I've started on response to post about flywheel, got to find a particular picture. I'll measure the rods on the welder today.

Cheers Phil

Default Bob has more power than most of us would realize

Today driving past Bob's place of employment, I observed an unconscionably large modern 4x4 truck with a distinctive "vanity" plate that would bring a smile to any Rusty Old Trucker on this forum. It isn't Bob's truck that got my attention. I already knew Bob wasn't shy, but that he was parked 3 spaces to the right of the space permanently reserved for the top dog, the big cheese, the man in charge, the one who has to answer to the Numero Uno.

I feel flushed with pride knowing I know someone so important. Or maybe just amused that Bob would just park on top of some insignificant little eco' fuel sipper.

This was a surveillance photo taken during a recent incursion into "the very few and far between CMP territories". The vehicle and plate are very similar to the one listed above. The perpetrator was apprehended and interrogated using the tired and tested down east method........beer boarding.

Bob! Thank you for stopping and visiting with us, Bill and I both wish that it could have been a bit longer but thanks stopping here as a part of your down east venture. I hope that you and Joyce had a great trip !!

Kind regards

Craig Tanner

Default Spot Welder information

Hi Bob

Here is the information on the spot welding prongs, the first picture shows my collection of prongs, while my HTP QuickSpot II Spot Welder uses welding arms which are at the mounting point Diameter of .787 inches or approximately 20MM. http://www.htpweld.com/products/spot...quickspot2.htm http://www.htpweld.com/products/spot...ersatongs.html

Over the years I have also used prongs or welding arms which are for the made I believe made for the Hobart http://www.hobartwelders.com/product...ips_chart.html http://www.hobartwelders.com/products/spot/hsw/ and others which are smaller in diameter by using brass bushings to match the size. The other tips I have are .625 inch diameter.

You will note that the long tongs are covered in rubber this is just sheet rubber to act as insulation so that the tongs don’t ground out on when reaching in to a deep point.

Hope this answers your questions.

Weare Rally was good though a bit wet, the East Weare flood control area that we usually use for trail rides was actually closed on Saturday because of high water so alternative rides had to be used. Several Youtube posts of the rally can be found at http://www.youtube.com/results?searc...rch_type=&aq=f . Vehicle count at noon on Saturday was 125+/- on the field.

Default Thanks Phil...

....so no matter what they say in these Men magazines.... size does NOT matter if you use a brass sleeve........ hummm!

The one I need for the doors is the bottom RH on the first picture also shown as the top LH on the second slide.....

I need to reach inside the frame and clearance is a problem.... like the idea of a rubber sleeve to make sure the pwoer goes where it is intended.....

Will be measuring tomorrow.....

....currently in process of ripping off the floor to reach Tcase linkage for adjustment........

Will keep you posted of my findings.....

Thanks again for your help...

Default Tarp pick up

Hi Guys:

Thank you all for the various offers. I will be putting the cheque in the mail (yeah, I know, where have we heard that ONE before!) this evening after I deposit Her Majesty's monthly pension to this somewhat worn old warrior.

Bob: your offer for later in Sep seems the simplest (Jiff, much appreciated that you would get it to TO for me!) so if'n I can impose, thats the way I'd like to go. I leave for 'frika on 2 Oct and return about 23 Nov.

I need to check in on MLU more often; I seem to go long spells not doing so, as I am only now finding about that Vintage Powerwagons page, as I scroll back up through the last couple of months posts. I just this week past took two pairs of singled-ended links to a welding shop to have made into a pair of 9 1/4" links - I got them from a local supplier of suspension restoration parts, who managed to come up with 7 out of the 8 I needed, but I only took the 4. Cost me $40 just for the four pieces, no idea what the welder is going to charge me, so $15US is a good deal. If I call him, and he hasn't done them yet, maybe I can get him to make them the 8-inchers, and get the 9 1/4s from powerwagons. Been mostly rounding up engine and radiator related odds and ends and hardware from various sources lately, and expecting my fuel tanks to be done any day now. Still waiting on a piece to be made for the windshield throwouts, too, one the swivel blocks that mounts on the frame, as I only had three.

Haven't been back to that farm since I visited a few years back, haven't heard of any changes there.

Sounds like you've been rounding up some goodies: About that body with the side door - what are you plans for the door?

Good to hear from you Mark. Which part of the throwout mechanism do you need (I'm a picture guy - which explains my extensive Playboy collection...). Door wise, well, I am being cautious until I get all the doors I need for my 44 HUP. I will have more news about doors and other HUP items later next week. We have a road trip planned for Saturday, so you folk in Southern Ontario, don't worry about your daughters - lock up your C15s and HUPs...

Speaking of HUPs...I spent a few hours out at the barn this afternoon to enjoy the sounds of fall, which sounded like spring and summer (rain). I finally got the fuel tank protector plates onto the 45:

I had to convince the rear pax side fender into a position that allowed the mounting of the plate. When I had the fenders repaired, some warping happened.

Tomorrow we pack up the Ford and trailer and head south!

Default Report from on the Road

Grant, Bob and I are highballing down the 401 near Trenton with some HUP goodies in tow. ETA Ottawa 2:30 AM. Weather is good - no more rain! Traffic is light. Bob is giving a history lesson on inline sixes. Grant is taking his turn at the wheel, and I am in the back seat typing and smiling. More later.

Default Report from the Road

Finally off the 401 and heading north to Hammond. Bob is at the wheel for the final leg. We got Raw Dog on the sat radio and no traffic on the country road (except the odd deer and a family of skunks). The coffee is wearing off, but the buzz will last until we leave Hammond for Ottawa. Great haul so far...

Another example of what happens when powerful tools are left in unsupervised hands!

Whodothunk twenty years ago that there would be this thing known as the internet, nor that it would be possible to type a text message on a portable computer while riding in the backseat of a truck full of rebrobates (well, a truck full of enthousiastic old vehicle rebuilders)?

Default Since you asked

The window throwout bit I need is the piece that attaches the throwout arm to the window frame, secured with a staked clevis pin. I asked the machine shop out in the country to cobble one up for me, but he's a busy guy, and last time I checked in with him, a couple of weeks back, he still hadn't got around to it. I have had to acquire or fabricate all the throwout and bracket bits as all that was missing or broken on the truck when I got it.

As for doors, on reflection I realize the side and rear doors are not interchangeable - hinges and latch are on opposite sides. - I am hoping to find a rear door, or at least the bottom part, with hinges on right-hand side. Otherwise, I will have to try to patch together the old door and find, or have fabricated, a pair of hinges.

I phoned the welder today, and apparently has done the links, so when I find out how much he wants for the job, and how much it would cost to re-work them to 8-inch opposite ends, I will decide whether to have him do that and buy the 9.25" pair from powerwagons.

Ought to have my tanks back soon: I have am having a pair of good tanks made up from three tanks; the original LH tank, which was not too bad, an acquired LH tank which had original been a RH tank which Bill Spence had had refurbished and converted to LH, then decided he didn't need, so I am having converted back to RH, and the original RH tank, which was rusted and rotted out, which donates the filler pipe, etc. Confused yet? No idea what the shop will end up charging me for all that, but I will probably take the rad to them next for a checkup and refurb.

Here is a photo of the hardware you refered to (the block that attaches to the window frame and allows the throw out arm to pivot). PM me with your mailing address and I will send it (them) to you.

Default Better late than never....

Just hate it when work interferes with your MLU activites....

Here are some pics of the last load......

......for some reason they keep getting bigger and taller....

So far the OPP has been very understanding !!!!

1300 km ......19 hours....

Noticed that the Ford rode on the helper springs with the extra engine, tranny, T case, spare manifoldssss, etc and assorted tools and parts....but having an "Injun" in the back sure helps with the traction.

Boob

PS... the trucks are guarded by our Hammond steel vulture......which loves to nibble on Furds!!!!

That black cab with the rear end of a HUP instead of the normal back of the cab looks familiar... if it's the same one, last time I saw it in 2004 it had snow all around it.

Oh man, for a moment I thought there were no Hammond updates, but than I reaised I wasn't looking at an old recovery, but a new one! Great stuff!

What's up next? A clark CA-1 dozer to replace the tractor in the yard?

Rob, thanks for the reply on the primer. I still have to find out which options I have here in Holland, but the brand you mentioned does make my search a lot easier.

Default Bob I finally understand !

Bob , Are you single handed aiming to collect all the CMP trucks ever built and that were issued in Canada or shipped over seas then returned at the end of hostilities?

I thought maybe it was a new Green initiative , Return them to the plant that built them for End of life recycling, Quite a task but if you carry on collecting them at the current rate of two at a time, Should all be done by the end of 3009, maybe 3010 provided the local traffic police dont get you for overloading or carrying hazardous waste without a licence, [Hazard to your wallet maybe]. Your tow truck should carry a ledgend THE GRIME REAPER, [Yes you read it right GRIME]
Have you ever considered restoring a CMP semi and have a nice long deck put on the trailer? collect 4 or more at a time, this should see you finished collecting maybe a 1/4 of a century sooner!
On the bright side you are doing a wonderful job with all the CMPS that you are saving from the scrappie and of course I watch with interest the HUP restorations as they are such nice vehicles. Very practical in size and with the climate up in the northern hemisphere practical in summer and winter.
Regards to all "Barn wallahs" Stephen

We have been told of an FWD SU (right-hand-drive, located in Quebec, I don't have permission to state precise location - see thread about Quebec RHD). I have suggested to Bob that it would be an appropriate, if rather slow, tow vehicle for CMP recovery. It is BIG and HEAVY compared to a CMP, but would be unique. The latest recovery would have been entirely different in the FWD - 2 days instead of 1 and a horrendous quantity of gasoline instead of rather less diesel but it would have had character.

Default Have you notice how many people view this thread?

Hi Bob, Grant, Richard, et al

Have you guys noticed how many views this thread has.

Get a couple more viewers and you could have your own reality TV program, but what would you call it:

Red Green, no that one has been used

CMPS gone wild

CMP busters

Just kidding but we really need to look in to a web cam for the barn, which would more interesting that most of what is on TV normally.

Cheers Phil
