We always used the standard A-frame, which was usable on everything from the Jeep to the APCs. They used to be fairly thin, but then in the 80s they came out with a thicker one. Those are the ones you see on ebay all the time these days.

What I used to do was take some of the bent a-frames, and cut them down to about half the size for use with the lighter vehicles like the Jeeps and the LSVW. It saved a lot of hernias, but was not an official modification.
