Tony, I'd say they were leather. I have the book and it looks like it is stitched in a rectangular patern with a cross, corner to corner. It looks like there is only one hole in each strap with a long bit after the hole.
The early carriers appear to have had leather straps giving way to rubber and then to webbing. So yes, leather.
