You answered your own question. Particularly in a cold climate 12 volt is the only way to go! Reliable starts, all parts readily obtainable and MUCH cheaper, brighter lights, can jump start from any modern vehicle, can run your in-car DVD player or MP3!

Starter will handle 12 volts without doing anything.

Original generator/dynamo will easily produce 12 volts but you need to get a 12 volt voltage regulator from a car wrecking yard of any 60/70 era car (better if off a type that had generator not alternator). Some of the wartime voltage regulators can be "tweaked" up to 12 volt so you can use the original.

Change light globes to 12 volt.

Any auto electrician will give you an in line resistor to put in the fuel gauge wire to reduce it to 6 volt so you dont have to change your instrument. All the other instruments work normally.

Coil can be any INTERNAL RESISTOR type off any car. Probably an older model but all motor parts shops carry them. Condensor should be replaced at the same time - take your old one down and match it to one with the same size, screw hole position and wire length - off any car.
