Internally, the components are interchangable, but the external castings are different with the Ford mounting the extension arm for the shift levers to the outside of the case, while the Chev mounts the arm to a chassis crossmember and does not have the mounting holes on the case.
So a Ford case will go into a Chev vehicle using the Chev bracket, while a Chev case won't go into a Ford vehicle as you won't be able to mount the shift tower.
