I have recently renovated a couple of signal torches. The one on the left is Canadian with a conical shroud and push on colour filter. The one on the right is British and usually comes with a similar cowl and filter to the one on the left. This example however has a three colour rotating filter with a mesh dimming cover. I haven't been able to find out any dates or info on this type and no pictures of one in use.
Does anyone recognise it? Many thanks, John EDIT: Last edited by John Ruffhead; 01-01-18 at 11:04. |

Hi Robert
Sorry you ran into the dreaded photobucket ransom notice, which prevents you from sharing your photos with other people. The work around is bring the photos you want to post up on your computer take a screen shot then up load the screen shot. I don't think they have figured out how to block the yet. Cheers Phil

Hanno is there a way to block these posts? I mean can something be set up to automatically reject a post that includes "photobucket"?

Sorry John. I didn't mean to sound grumpy and it wasn't meant to be a personal attack on you.
I'm just pleased that I never took up a photo bucket account. Thanks for posting the photos. I've never seen the signal torches before. Btw., Welcome aboard! Thanks to you to Phil, for the helpful hint.

Interesting; that's a naval signalling torch with an Air Ministry stores label attached.
![]() RN = Admiralty Pattern 16001A. RAF = 5A/2878 Torches, Electric, Type J. The Army may well have also allocated it a stores code in the WB series, and if it survived into the 1950s it would have probably acquired a NATO stock number before being discontinued. The carrying strap with filters (most likely Red, Green and neutral density for reducing the light output) is something I've not seen before. Best regards, Chris. |

I have one of the Canadian ones, stamped C.C.B. AP 16001 plus the Arrow symbol. The stamps have been done twice to the butt-end.
It seems to be all brass with a dark green paint coat. I got this from the woman who made it in the factory here in Toronto during the war, so it's brand new, never used, with almost no wear to the paint. I didn't see a response to the question about what C.C.B. stands for. Does anyone know? |
